CUSTOMER REVIEWS
An essential and effective safety item. Posted: 02 September 2010
Our previous Kidde 9CO-5UK lasted for eight years before it told us that it was no longer working. The manufacturer recommends replacement after six years and the warranty is for five years. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible and odourless killer, we have no idea if it is there or not, and yet we mostly have heating systems which burn a fuel that can produce CO. An effective CO detector is essential in a modern draught-proof house.
As an electronic engineer, I am impressed that the control system is so well designed and takes proper account of the limited operational life of the CO detector mechanism itself. The batteries last a couple of years at a time, so the running costs are very low.
In use, the sounder and two LED lights on this unit tell us if
1. the battery is low - a cheep with green flash and red flash, or
2. if the sensor has died of old age - a cheep with just the red flash and the reset does not stop it, or
3. normally there is just a silent brief green flash to tell us it is still happy with the battery and working properly, and that happens just as one is about to give up waiting for it, or
4. there is CO present, the sounder wakens everyone!
The instructions on this replacement unit are a vast improvement on those that came eight years ago with the previous one. These are far more readable and are now perfectly clear to understand. For example, in the old instructions it did not mention that only the red LED would flash with the cheep when the sensor had reached the end of its life, so I spent a while wondering why I could not stop the cheep, even with new batteries.
Correct positioning of the alarm is vital, and the instructions cover this reasonably well. They also mention protecting it from paint fumes and other solvents because these can reduce the working life of the sensor. It should not degrade on the warehouse shelf because it comes in a tough, sealed plastic pack, but be careful when cutting open the pack.
The alarm is loud, and can be heard all over our house, even through two closed doors. Even the cheep penetrates enough to make sure we change the batteries, or most recently the whole device.
This is NOT a smoke alarm. You still need a suitable Ionisation Smoke Alarm.
I sleep much more soundly knowing these are protecting us.

Good - but packaged badly Posted: 09 May 2010
I bought this alarm on the advice of british gas when they serviced my boiler, it arrived quickly to my work and i stripped it of its packaging to take it home. When i got there i found the way it had been packed had crushed on of the battery contacts so i had to put a lump of solder to stop it going off randomly. (as i didn't have the pack to return it). Its a shame as i have a Kidde smoke alarm and thats brilliant. If that hadn't happened it would have been 5 stars!
Quick replacement of CO alarm Posted: 16 April 2010
There is not much to say about an alarm that you hope will never sound. My old one sounded its death buzz after eight years and I ordered a new one. The next day I fitted the new alarm into the same mounting as the original and the job was done without leaving the house. I look forward to another eight years of silence from the alarm.
